Last Tuesday we ran out of dog food and went out and purchased a bag of Large Breed Dry Dog Food made by Iams. He had been a completely healthy dog until after he ate some of the new dog food. For the next 3 days he threw up A LOT, had loose very bloody stools, and it was getting really really bad and he was going downhill fast. On Thursday (a day before the recall came out), I decided by myself that it was the food and told my husband that we weren't going to feed him any more of that food that it must be a bad batch, and I went and purchased Science Diet food which seems to agree with our dog just fine. He hasn't had any further problems now that we switched to something else.

I know that the recall doesn't say anything about dry dog food, but I keep expecting the recall to be expanded because of what we had experienced. I haven't been able to get anyone on the phone about it yet.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Bob - I'm sure my dog wasn't allergic to Iams ever before. We have bought it for him many other times and it was just fine.

By the way, I did call the vet and told them what had happened on Thursday (prior to the recall), and I told them we had already switched dog food. They said to watch him closely to see if the symptoms continued, and if they did, then to bring him in immediately. Since the symptoms didn't continue and he got better right after we switched away from Iams we didn't take him in. Then the vet called on Friday evening and said there was a major recall....

I thought I was reading my own question! I have had trouble with the Iams puppy dry food! She was sick the same way two weeks ago,and started getting sick again last night.I also today bought Science Diet and she seemed to like it.Now,my brother tells me that's on the list too, only in wet, just like Iams!!What is safe!!He thinks his 13 year old cat might be dead, because she,s been missing for three days now,and she never misses a meal. Her food was on the list!!!!! Now he's feeding his dog what he eats!PEOPLE FOOD!!

I've seen quite a few people launch into lecture mode about what to and not ot feed cats and other pets. I do appreciate the information but could you do a favor for those of us who have been badly affected by the economic Down turn. When it's a choice between surrendering an animal to a shelter in hopes of it being able to find a new home, and feeding the animal as economically as possible until the economy turns around. Do you have any suggestions on how to make do? An old man or woman whose family has now dwindled to only the cat or dog can no longer afford the expensive canned foods unless it's cut with kibble. These are the folks who choose between food for the table and medication to keep them well. these are the ones who share their food with the cat or dog who is like their own child. Can you relate to the times in which you live and help find resources for the ones who would rather not see their pet euthanize, however humanly. Homes not affected by the economy are getting harder and harder to find. What can you do to help?

Iams and Eukanuba dry food is not made by Menu Foods, thus did not contain the contaminated ingredients, so it won't be included in the recall. It is made by a completely different manufacturer.

Most likely, you got a spoiled bag of dog food. If the pet store keeps it on the shelf too long, it will spoil and cause the symptoms you describe. Take the remainder back to the pet store and get a refund. I have had the very same thing happen once before with a different brand and I was refunded.

Iams is garbage, that's probably why. So is Science Diet, just for the record. I know they are pushed like crack by vets, but they aren't good quality foods.

Do some online research to see which foods are best, and are available in your area. Nutro's Lamb and Rice formula is a really good one, that is also pretty widely available. There are many others though, but the majority of dog food out there is really pretty awful.

I'd suggest slowly switching to a better brand.

No, we have not had that experience. I do believe you are correct about the recall being expanded. The first day of the recall did not include Iams or Eukanuba on the list. The next day it did include them.

This is very scary. When are we going to know when the dog food the stores have are all clear and okay for our dogs to eat.

I would call a vet and talk to them. Sometimes dogs can have adverse reactions to their food being changed. Keep a close eye on him and take him to the vet if he gets any worse or if the vet wants to see him for tests.

I hope he will be fine.

not me if he had that reaction on the dry food, I would say maybe there is someting they are not telling us, because the bigger the recall the more money is lost.

They call it damage control or trying to prevent a panic.

A several lawsuits sometimes are cheaper than a total recall.
