I have never been very good at learning foreign languages, but I would REALLY like to learn to speak Spanish, and my college requires that we take 3 semesters of a foreign language in order to graduate. I am enrolled in Spanish 101, but it is blowing my previous 4.0 GPA! I currently have a B in the class, but I am hanging on by a thread. The words I learn, escape me a day or so later, and I am having one heck of a time with the regular and irregular verbs! Is there any program I can buy that would make this easier for me, help me pass this class with an A, and succeed at learning to fluently speak Spanish? To make matters worse, my instructor is not a very nice person, and he often yells at students who ask too many questions or ask him to repeat something he's said. I really want to learn to speak Spanish, and I really want to keep my 4.0 GPA! Help!

You can a) stick with it and get a tutor, if you have a 4.0 obviously you are capable of critical thinking and organizing yourself. b) withdraw from the class if it already isn't too late. c) try your hardest blow the course and retake it during the summer with a different professor and just replace the grade from the previous semester. Spanish 101 isn't that bad don't make it out to be more than it is.

Verbs in Spanish are difficult because of the changes in each tense. But the key is basically to memorize them, there is no rule of how they change, so that's the best option you have. I am a Spanish speaker and I'm learning French, I have pretty much the same problem (except for the bad teacher)..The verbs are a pain in the neck, and the only think I can do is memorize them. Good luck!

ok Spanish 101 is probably going to be the most difficult out of ALL of your spanish classes. The point of that class isn't necessarily to teach you spanish, rather "how" to learn spanish. All of the following spanish classes will be easy just like any other class (assuming you learned from 101)

Span. 101, the very basics, should be taken very seriously. Study and learn as much as you can in that class because you will need it all for the next semester. In the beginning, it's ok to use flashcards to memorize the conjugations, but try to just get a feel for it rather than memorizing it like a computer.

Sometimes, when you are in class, you will learn just as much by listening rather than asking questions. And when you do ask questions, your professor will LOVE when you are asking questions in Spanish.

"como se dice ___" how do you say ____?
"que quiere decir____" What does __ mean?

Learn the Spanish alphabet, especially the VOWELS. English has two ways to say each vowel, but spanish only has ONE. For example, "Para" is pronounced "pah-dah" not "pair-uh"

Try to think to yourself in spanish. What are you doing right now? With who? How do you ask questions? Make conversation with yourself.

Que haces? What are you doing?
Que hago? What am I doing?
Que estoy haciendo? What am I doing (right now)?
Con quien?
Donde?
Por que? porque...

Go in spanish speaking chat rooms.

And if you've never studied a foreign language, it will be very difficult (at first) getting the hang of verb conjugations, irregular verb conjugations, adjectives that must match in gender and quantity, pronoun placement etc.

Try finding a "torrent" site to download "The Rosetta Stone - Spanish." That helped me out a lot. Make some friends who speak spanish (like at work).
$0

Or for $5, you can download a PDF from sparkcharts.com called "Spanish Grammar" which goes awesome with "Spanish Verbs" and "Spanish Vocabulary."
$15

Or for about $15, you can buy a book called "501 Spanish Verbs" (any major bookstore).

Sometimes it's better to not think too much about it and to just accept the new rules of the new language. If you don't understand a new concept right away, just relax and pay a lot of attention until you start getting the hang of it.

You must practice every day.
