I just got some clipless pedals and was installing the cleats and had a question.

i can't get the flat nut that goes inside the shoe to get thread. The bolt is just long enough to thread into the shoe. It LOOKS like it will hold with just that. Is this safe?

The bolts are only screwed into the threads of the shoe and not the flat nut inside the shoe. (The flat nut is not part of the shoe)

You need longer bolts. Some pedals are not compatible with ALL shoes, and some shoes have thicker soles than others. If you can't get at least 3-4 threads of engagement into the nut plate in the sole, then get longer bolts.

You should be able to talk a bike shop out of four cleat screws if you're really nice, and any shop worth their workstands will have a bucket of miscellaneous parts to dig into.

Remember to put Loctite (my choice) or grease on the threads so they don't corrode and become stuck forever, and a 4mm hex bolt will only go so tight before it breaks.

Yes.Some shoes do not have a threaded piece to screw into. the "flat nut" you are talking about is for this type of shoe
