I think that $50 is a good estimate for an average cost. Regardless of what chip you go with, make sure that your information is registered. With some chips like AVID or Home Again, you need to pay an additional fee for your information to be registered. It is pointless to even microchip your animal if you are not willing to do this!
Every month, we get 2-3 dogs at my humane society who aren't registered but have a microchip. Makes it that much harder to find an owner!
I don't know about trends, but I personally had my animals microchipped because I would want them back had they managed to sneak out on me. I have a french bulldog who is deaf, so I can't exactly call out for her to come back. As a breed, they are not one you see a lot in my area. I know they are expensive and I'm afraid that someone would try to steal her just because of that. This is one way that I can prove my cats and dog are my animals. Tags and collars can easily be removed. Micro chips have to be surgically removed

Yeah, all dogs and cats have to be microchipped. Laws, regulations etc cause they have so many feral ones and like the more dangerous types that attack other animals and people they need to know where they came from and why their owner hasnt taken proper precautions.

Well i got my cat desexed and microchipped for around $123. Im thinking getting a dog microchipped would be roughly the same so probably around $30-40 to get it done properly at a vet. That way you can trust it is done the right way with the right stuff!

It depends where you live and where you have it done. If you adopt a dog from shelter or pound, he price is usually included with the adoption fee. I know that where I live in Florida, some shelters will do it even if you didn't adopt your dog from there.

However since you have to take your dog to the vet to have it done, it probably depends on the vet. My dog has tattoo, but I've been considering getting her microchipped, as well I know that my vet's office charges $25 U.S..

Be careful about having it done at Petmart because I heard a story on the news ahile ago that the chip they use cannot be read by all pounds, shelters or vet's offices.

I don't know where you are located, so can't answer you about whether or not it's compulsory to microchip your dog...but I found this article for you, about various house bills, proposed legislation, etc:

As to the costs? There are two costs that can be involved; the first is the cost of the chip and implantation by a vet, and the second is the registration fee with the company. Both fees vary widely, depending on where you buy the chip, who puts it in (shelter vet or regular vet), what types of services the company provides with registration, and whether the cost of registration is underwritten or sponsored by any animal welfare program. Confusing, huh?

I've heard that local vets (Chicago metro area) charge anywhere from $25 to $45 for insertion, but all of my critters got their chips through shelter programs.

For example, I got my rabbit from the Humane Society. Her adoption fee of $20 included her spay, and microchip insertion. I was given her chip number and registration papers, and for $15 I changed the chip registration out of the shelter's address, and to my own. Very cheap.

I took my (once-feral) kitty to a local shelter for a special free spay/neuter program. At that time, I could purchase and have a microchip inserted, and they covered the cost of my registration. $25 total. A deal!

Different companies offer different types of registration services, so it would pay to compare apples to apples. Here are links to the two biggest microchip providers, Avid and HomeAgain.

Microchip ID is used in birds, cats, dogs, alpacas, llamas, goats, sheep, horses and other livestock. If your pet goes missing, having a microchip speeds up the process of returning it to you. I find strays all the time, and my vet scans them for me, for free. Sadly, only about half of them have a chip, so it's very hard to find their owners. :(

Hope this helps, and give your dog a head skritch for me!

I don't know if they have one there but it's cheap, If I didn't get it free I would of paid 30 dollar for it that at that Vet..Other Vet are gonna charge $$$ ...It's just a shot they give your dog and it's done.. Takes less the 2 minz...

I don't know where you live but here in Texas you can have your dog microchipped at the SPCA for $28.00. Sometimes they even run specials and you can have it done for $20.00.

The price varies, but it's really not that much.. implanting the chip is in the 50 dollar range I've heard.
