The advice is correct. The best thing now is to study and work hard for your grades because they can bring merit based scholarships. Also, study hard for the ACT/SAT for the same reason. There are two free membership scholarship search engines that I will include that could draw out some scholarships better because both forms are thorough in the survey. There are some scholarships not tied to specific colleges and universities out there. Good luck!

First - Cal State system is run by state elected officials (public), rates and funding is state controlled. Private colleges like USC elect their own boards and rely primarily on funding from enrollments or private supporters. All accredited schools still follow the same regulations of their accrediting bodies.

As for scholarships, you will find that a lot of them may actually require for you to commit to a college first. But start checking out the requirements for grades and start making your high school resume based on proposing or requesting those scholarships. Join student leadership or volunteer activities, young Republican's or Democrats (which ever).

Also, find a major or interest for college and check out corporate scholarship programs. Like engineering or biotech - these are areas in which industry recognizes that not many students are enrolling and they will setup yearly awards for students who show potential. Some of these "Corporate" programs are not as competitive because only a few people know about them or apply. Print out the fortune 1000 list and start looking for endowments or scholarships. Some will be regional and you have to live in a certain area but for example look for things like "Ford Foundation" - but you really have to dig for these and write a lot of letters. The better your high school career looks the better chance you have. Even if your GPA right now is 2.5, you still have a chance if you can maintain 3.5 in your last 2 years and complete with an overall of 3.0 or higher. But what really helps are those extra activities, they look very attractive on your application - that they are investing in a future leader.

Here is an example from Southern California Edison...

Besides scholarships you should check this out. There is a program that works with local grocery stores. You register your grocery card with their website and a portion of all the purchases go to paying for college.

i agree, the advice was right on.... for you to begin looking to find whats out there and available for your interests/needs.

there are websites that tell you about the different schools, and some that are rated by the students.

i will just list all that i have found out here. make sure you pass it on to all of your friends, so they can have help with their schooling as well.

ONE MORE THING: all of this info is free online. any site that charges to find this info for you, you need to avoid.
