I was prescribed vicodin recently for long term use. I am concerned about the amount of tylenol I will be putting into my body. I remeber in high school would would disolve the pill and take the tylenol out somehow ( for recreational use yes) but I cant remember exactly how we did it. Does anyone know? I cant seem to find it on the web. I really need the pain relief but not at the cost of a new liver..

Long term management of pain with a short acting medication is a bad idea. You should speak with your doctor about changing medication if you have constant pain.

Vicodin comes with a number of varying amounts of acetaminophen, usually 500 milligrams but sometimes 325 milligrams.

In general 8 pills of the 500 mg per day would be the maximum amount. 12 pills of the 325 mg per day would also be the max for that strength.

There are many other pain medications besides Vicodin that might work better for you, and many have no acetaminophen at all.

Instead of trying to doing all the chemistry, having some people thinking that your real goal is to get pure hydrocodone why not as your doctor for a pain reliever without acetaminophen? Options include Darvocet, Talwin, Ultram and a few others.

Using Vicodin as your MD prescribes no doubt will allow the Tylenol component to be metabolized and excreted with out damage to your liver. Your doctor knows the potential for liver damage and I don't he hasn't considered the possible damages.

The amount of tylenol isn't going to harm your liver unless you drink or something. Tell your doctor if you have a concern with the tylenol component. There are alternative drugs.

Are you seeing a pain management doctor? If not, I recommend it. My pain doc said that since I was going to need the narcotic meds for the forseeable future he absolutely would not give me one that had Tylenol in it because it would be terrible for my liver. If your pain doc is giving you long-term meds with Tylenol you might need to find another doc rather than trying to do the cold water extraction.

Talk to your doctor. There are other med's on the same line with lessor amounts of tylenol. Norco is vicodine with much less tylenol. There are also more. Good luck and a smart choice with the change.

Yes, there is a method called "cold water extraction."

The details are contained below. I am providing them to you because I am going to trust that you have a legitimate need to take the medication on a long term basis and are concerned about the damage to your liver, and not because you are going to abuse the drug or obtain it illegally.

Plenty of people I know have used this method. It will not kill you, but liver toxicity from Tylenol overuse WILL.

as long as you're not using too much you shouldn't be doing any damage. Just keep track of how many you take and don't go over the daily allowance. The acetaminophen also helps with the pain - it's there to give you extra pain relief as well - if that's really what you need then you should be fine.

Talk to your doctor. Do not listen to anyone on the net about doing this. You could kill yourself. Tell your doctor the truth, that there is too much tylenol in the vicodin for you. They have smaller doses. andrew

Seriously sounds like you have a dependence issue.
You should speak to your MD or other source.
Sorry... call it as I see it.
Don't hate me.
