They will just make a nest on the bottom of the cage. I am going through about the same thing. My teals have just hatched eggs on the bottom of there cage. The babies are doing great and they are not having a problem. I would recommend though that you should put the egg into a box after they lay it. There will be a better chance for it to hatch in there.

If she has not been with a male, don't worry about a nest box. That is for raising chicks. Just let her lay the egg and sit on it until she is done with it.
If she has been with a male, go out tomorrow and purchase a nest box and pine shavings for the bottom. Place about 2" of shavings in the bottom of the box, place it in the cage or attach it to the outside. If she laid the egg, wash your hands and place it in the box.
You are washing your hands so you do not accidentally introduce germs into the egg since it is porus. Don't worry about your "smell", birds have a poor sense of smell and it will not bother them.
Don't be suprised if she refuses the box in the beginning since she has not had time to decide if it is a "safe" nesting place or not.

I'm just wondering how you know she is ready to have an egg. Birds like finches will lay eggs anywhere, in their seed cups, in their treat cups, on the floor of the cage. I've seen cockateils do the same. My budgies mate, but they do not have a nest box and nothing else that they can use for nesting material, so they don't lay eggs.
If you want the bird to lay eggs, you can put a small basket in the cage. For my finches I tied one up on the top perch and that's what they used. You can put some newspaper, paper towels, string, strands of straw in the cage and see if they will use that for a nest. Budgies don't normally build nests..they lay in a bare nest box. It would help to know what kind of bird you have.

your bird can't have an egg when there is no nesting box.
about 10%possibility, but i've had birds for years, and they never hatch eggs without a nesting box. u should get one.
but u never said anything about what type of birds they are, so u have to decide yourself of how big your nesting box is if u buy 1.

Hi there. Different nesting boxes are required for different kinds of birds. I don't know what birds you have. They generally range from 5-10 dollars. Be sure that your birds are getting proper nutrition. Many thrive on a pellet food made for them, seeds at 10% maximum, fruits and veggies excluding chocolate and avocado. Add chopped cooked egg with crumbled shell for the extra protein, other nutrients and calcium needed to ensure a healthy hen and offspring. Some studies suggest that a healthy diet can prevent egg binding which is life threatening to the hen when an egg gets stuck in her cloaca.Nesting material can be shredded newsprint, Kleenex, bits of yarn. At least provide that. Not all eggs are fertile. Successful copulation had to have occurred. May things go very well and have a prosperous year.

She'll make a nest out of whatever is handy. Mine climbed under the newspaper at the bottom of the cage and laid her egg. Watch for egg-binding (where the egg gets stuck). If this happens take her to a vet immediately.

Hi if you don't have a breeding box--make one until you can buy one. A kleenex box will work. Put the opening to where the birds can have room to go in and out. Attach the Kleenex box to the cage(where the opening is)., making sure it is secure. pit soft cotton or soft material inside. But remember--it is only a tempory fix. Good luck.( Also poke a few small holes for air in the back part of the box)
