As a student pilot,
The three C's
CLIMB...for better radio reception, vis etc
CONFESS..contact atc and inform them of your problem,
COMPLY... steer headings, altitude suggested, they are there to HELP!!!
Call up the nearest facility with radar. (if frequency is unknown,use 121.5 (international emergency freq) inform them you are unsure of your location and ask for vectors to where you are going.
Flight Service (FSS) used to offer DF Steering but no more.
As an experienced pilot, with working avionics I would triangulate my position using the two VOR receivers I have on board. also have DME, ADF and A VFR only GPS. if all that fails.......

Since Cherokeeflyer gave as good an answer as there is, I'll just add that pilots don't get lost. Sometimes we don't know precisely where we are at that moment, but we don't get lost. Bad for the image and all that stuff, don't ya know. Now where was I?

The guys forgot the fourth C- Communicate. Listen for local traffic, triangulate your location on VORs, use your "nearest" function on the GPS.
The higher your altitude, the better your reception and less chance of hitting obstructions.

First and foremost, Communicate. Radio reception improves with altitude but first try to get an idea of where you are. Don't ruin someone else's day by blocking their vision with the trailing part of your fuselage..
