On digital cameras you now look on the back to see the whole pitcher. So then why do they still have the little peek hole at the top of the camera? Its not like you can put film in it and use the peek hole. So why?

Hello. On your digital camera you've got the option of using the CCD's LCD display to more correctly compose your shots. The LCD's view is right on and shows exactly what's there. The other option uses a VIEWFINDER, and though it may show the zooming action taken... it is not showing all 100% of what will be in your image. Using the viewfinder is a way to compose your shot whilst conserving your battery power. Many digicams are foregoing the viewfinder for a larger LCD display... which will also use more power. So it is helpful and can be beneficial if you're running low on battery power, but take a good look to see what happens after depressing the button. Also when you take your shots, be sure to get a focus lock by depressing it HALFWAY down... and then complete it to snap your shot. Hope this helps.

One is an actual viewfinder (the little peek hole) - the viewfinder gives you a close proximity to the actual image but since the picture is taken with the lens and you are looking through a hole that's next to the lens, you don't see exactly the same image as what the picture will be - it will be just a little bit off center. The lcd is an electronic view of the actual image you will get when you take the picture. Both are important for different reasons - sometimes the light around you is too bright to see the lcd and you need the viewfinder - other times looking through the viewfinder is inaccurate so you will want to use the lcd. Traditionally with film cameras, there was viewfinder, and it was usually above the lens and then later above and on the right or left side of the camera. Then came the camera with a series of mirrors that were placed in front of the lens that would allow you to actually see the image of the picture you would take - that was called single lens reflex.

You can use both the lcd and the little peek hole to compose the picture - it just depends on the shooting conditions and your knowledge of the camera.

The viewfinder you mean? You never have had film directly feed through the viewfinder even in regular cameras. I believe they use the "peek hole" as another option in aiming / focusing your camera... Instead of looking at the screen you can look through the little hole and point and click...

Mostly for those old fashioned parents who are too old to keep up with the "new-fangled-technology", though I like using the viewfinder instead of holding it way out in front of me...

I hope that helps.

Kat G has the best and very informative answer.
In bright sunlight, the LCD screen is useless, also the camera is more stable when braced against your face, so the demise of the viewfinder is a bad thing, IMHO. On dSLR cameras, (with a few exceptions) you cannot see the image on the screen before it's taken, so the screen is for review only.

this is to allow you to turn off the screen you're sooooo......... proud of to enable you to use the camera for a longer time with out recharging, as the screen will take up a lot of power.
God bless,

If your talking about point and shoots, its becasue if you shoot in daylight the back LCD can wash out, so you have to switch to the viewfinder.

pitcher is spelt "picture", and its "peep hole" not peek hole.

apart from that, its to save battery life.

The viewfinder is a part of the lens . If you block it off all you'll see is your hand.
