The canned food was contracted out to menufoods by various companies to make for them since they only manufacture wet food only , not dry foods were not affected.since the dry food is made at a different facility which did not recieved any of the contaminated wheat
Menufoods recieved a contaminated batch of the wheat gluten likely containing a mold/fungus called Ochratoxin A
so all foods that where maufactured from that bad batch were affected with high levels of mo;dd
The molds fall under a group name called mycotoxins, they really cannot be killed by heating or cooking had the wheat been used in a dry kibble instead the effects would be the same
There have have been other mycotoxin related dog food recalls in the past
2006 Diamond dry foods from mold contaminated corn aflatoxin which destroys the liver
1999 doane Pet foods aflatoxin affect 55 brands of dry food
1995 Natures recipe vomitoxin -which causes vomiting but no organ damage

The wheat gluten isn't the problem. They are concerned that the particular wheat gluten they (Menu Foods) bought from a new supplier was contaminated, with what, they haven't figured out. Supposedly, it was not used in the other types of pet food.
And interesting note, in a quarterly taste test Menu Foods did on there product, 9 cats died. This test was not done because of customer complaints as the company had previously stated. Nor do they state exactly when the routine taste test was done. I wonder how long they knew it was killing pets before they recalled their product.

The wheat-gluten in the recalled foods contained a mold or other toxin. Wheat-gluten is not bad. The mold or toxin is. The mold probably multiplied in the wet or semi-moist foods to a level that became toxic or fatal to pets. Look at your local news website. It contains a specific list of foods recalled. Don't feed your pet any food on that list.

I've started feeding my Maltese/schnauzer raw red meat cubed with some dinovite sprinkled on it. She loves it! After all, they all come from wolves, so red meat is their natural diet. She seems happier and she only eats once a day and is content til the next day. I feed her between 1/2 lb. to 1 lb. and she weighs about 9-11 lbs. The only thing I have to worry about now is what they're feeding the cows I'm feeding her! I still leave dry food out for her to munch on, but she never touches it anymore. I don't blame her, can you imagine how they make that crap and what really gets tossed in there? I mean who's checking anyways?!? Apparently no one...

My understanding is that Menu Foods only manufactures wet and moist foods. They were the ones with the contaminated wheat gluten. Eukanuba and Iams made a big point in their press release that their dry food is made by a completely different manufacturer. Thus, no problem with the dry food.

The dry food is baked so it is dry, therefore the bacterias are killed and the wet food has water which can promote the growth of the molds and bacteria and is not killed like the baking process. Even though the Wet food may have been baked to produce, after adding the water the effect returns. One other thing, Dry food also promotes good teeth and gum health and a strong jaw.

Its about ingredients. Different ingredients go into different products in different amounts. That's where the problems are. All of those foods are poor quality anyway. Look into Innova, California Natural, Wellness, Canidae, Felidae, Artemis. All are great, all have websites.

My impression of this is that it was a particular lot of wheat gluten that was contaminated. Not that all wheat gluten will necessarily make your pet sick. Although, I don't feed my dogs anything with corn or wheat products in it.
