The following test will tell you what shouldn't be running.

Run PC Pitstop “Running Programs”
http://www.pcpitstop.com/
It will list all the programs that are running.
Entries are shaded based on threat level:
unknown, safe, optional, spyware/adware, virus.

Programs that can be disabled to improve computer performance will be marked. You then can run "msconfig" to disable these programs.
