it depends on what do you mean by protein..there are animal and vegetable proteins.

it isn't so much the amount of protein in a food as the body's ability to use it..

the body can only normally process like 20-30 grams of protein every 3-4 hours..any more will be used for energy or fat.

One can't eat a ton of meat..why? proteins will dry the body up and then constipation insues..just ask anyone who tried the atkins diet

plus different foods have different protein values....
sure a t bone steak has alot of protein..but it is of a lesser value..less likely to be used by the body..more likely stored as fat
the scale usually goes:
whey protein: used by bodybuilder..found in shops like gnc
egg protein; egg whites not yolk..be cautioned..it will give you some nasty gas
tuna
milk
beef
finally soy

for the money..tuna fish usually is the most economical out of the group..like 27 grams of protein..no carbs.. good quality protein...for like 50 cents a can

In rough descending order of the quality of protein:

Eggs
Beef/Lamb/Chicken/Pork/Fish
Milk/Cheese/Yogurt
Soy

Eggs score a 97 out of 100 as far as protein quality. The only thing better is breast milk, which scores a 100. But that isn't widely available!
