Beta- bockers have several adverse effects
Common adverse drug reactions associated with the use of beta blockers include: nausea, diarrhoea, bronchospasm, dyspnoea, cold extremities, exacerbation of Raynaud's syndrome, bradycardia, hypotension, heart failure, heart block, fatigue, dizziness, abnormal vision, decreased concentration, hallucinations, insomnia, nightmares, depression, erectile dysfunction and alteration of glucose and lipid metabolism.
Central nervous system adverse effects (hallucinations, insomnia, nightmares, depression) are more common in agents with greater lipid solubility, which are able to cross the blood-brain barrier into the CNS. Similarly, CNS adverse effects are less common in agents with greater aqueous solubility ..
A decade ago beta blockers re the first choice of trearment of high blood pressure.
Now they are used as the least preferred ones.

I was on Lopressor ( generic name Metoprolol ) 23 yrs. ago
I don't recall any negative effects using this med at all, even when I had a couple of beer. Mind you, everyone is different and having a beer could be quite harmful to another person. . My lifestyle did not change.
Yes the medication worked, But I did not want to take a pill for the rest of my life. I decided to work on becoming a type B .personality and ( under doctor approval and supervision ) weened off using this med.
