I quit smoking 3 days ago. I'm feeling really really good now but I still crave a smoke after my meals. I gave up cold turkey but I'm wondering when I'll stop thinking about smoking. Does any one know?

I do - I quit a year and a half ago after smoking for almost 30 years. The bad news - the craving and obsession with it never entirely go away. They just lessen over time. There will probably be a point after about a year (especially with a cocktail) when you will feel brave enough (and desperate enough) to take "just one drag". You will be so sure that it will be the greatest thing ever. Here's the good news - it will suck! You will choke, it will taste bad and the next day you will wake up feeling like you smoked a whole pack in one evening.
I had no trouble quitting, just staying off of them.
I wish you luck. If you have too much trouble, talk to the Doctor about a prescription for Wellbutrin.

You have to have the mindset of a person who thinks cigarettes are not totally healthy for you! You have to learn to look at a cigarette and find the truth of the matter by thinking how disgusting it really is to smoke, then and only then will you have the power to give it up. I smoked and not too long ago. But I really do not have a craving to smoke ever again, even if I'm drinking a beer or what not.
Keep yourself substantially busy with other activities and hang around people who don't smoke and you should be fine.

It will probably never go away, not completely, especially at times of stress. That's not to say it won't get better. It will!! I'd say, by six months you won't have the cravings after every meal, maybe only once a week? Once a month? Maybe not even that much. I had been a fairly heavy smoker for 13 years and by six months after I quit I didn't think about it at all unless I went out for a few drinks or had something really stressful going on.

Congratulations and good luck!

I'd have to agree with CRY$T, the cravings will probably never stop. I quit smoking 10 years ago when I found out I was pregnant with my first child and I still find myself "craving" a cigarette after I eat and while driving or riding in the car.

Cravings will lessen with time and the urge to smoke will go away faster (usually within 2-3 weeks) especially if you stay away from others that still smoke. Each time you resist temptations and think about something to do that's healthful instead, it gets that much easier. As you are getting healthier, you are also getting stronger, and eventually you will be able to not even picture yourself smoking ever again. Congratulations!

It takes a VERY long time. If you are using an aid to stop I suggest Commit. They worked for me when nothing else did and if you need that extra push, try this. Next time you feel like you HAVE to have one...smoke it...JUST one, then get a 20 ounce coke bottle with a lid and put about a quarter cup water and then tap your ashes in there and drop the cig in there when your done smoking it. Put the lid on and every time you crave one again just open that bottle and smell that wet cig and I promise it makes you stop craving that thing.
