i have a female puppy, have never had a female dog before, so i am learning too. apparently, a female goes into heat, and has a few stages. first, the genitalia become enlarged, then there is a slight bloody discharge, lasting about 4-5 days. this slows or stops but she is still in heat for about 15-16 more days. on or about the 15the day, from when she started bleeding, they are ovulating, and that is when they can get pregnant. if they get pregnant, seems as though the pregnancy lasts about 2 months. i am still learning, but you can google dogs in heat/pregnancy for more information.
good luck

Female dogs, when in heat, will "have a period", some tend to get overly friendly with people, pillows, ect. Don't let her out alone until you know for sure, unless you want puppies.
