A small dose of Inderal (propranolol) prior to the event can do wonders and yes, you need a Rx from a doc for it-it's a beta blocker.
Another non-medical strategy and equally harmless approach is to try being very tired before the presentation. Sounds crazy, but it works-it is impossible to be anxious when you are truly physically tired-the physiological calmness and emotional anxiety are incompatable. I always find I get enough of an adrenalin surge to present in a lively way even when I am tired however, but training and presentations are a big part of my job so I'm used to it. The tiredness just takes the edge off for me.

In my case, i never have gotten over the fear, but I have so much practice, that nobody can tell how afraid I am. I have social anxiety, but I have worked hard at it all my life. So you CAN do this!! Sooooooo many people who do public speaking have had this fear!

Since I am so scared, what I used to do was write a note across the top of my notes, "watch your pitch and speak slowly and don't fidget." to remind myself not to get squeaky and talk too fast and rock back and forth or fuss with a pen, whatever. That way I had a reminder right before doing the event. Make sure you know your stuff, too. You will have to practice, practice, practice all your life, then it really won't bother you so much. Really!!

Well it's totally natural to be nervous before a speech, i know it sounds like a cliche, but even famous people get a little nerves before a big speech. It is actually good because the adrenaline that flows through your body when your stressed or nervous makes you speak better. In your case, though, it seems a little severe. Be confident, that's important, and it is good to also picture yourself giving a good speech in your head, that often helps. Also know that, your not the only one and nobody is going to make fun of you, maybe if you throw up while your up there and cant speak, then yeah, but if you are confident and speak well, nobody is going to judge you or make fun of you!!

I first encountered this problem at the age of 15 and struggled with it in different levels and situations ever since. I'm 39 now and further on and very happy in my career. The fastest cure is pharmacuticals. Beta blockers, if you don't have asthma, work like alcohol (performers like Streisand use them) and Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac work wonders at removing the anxiety from your life altogether. Honestly, once you remember how to perform with the aid of these drugs, you can do it without them, but taper off and under your doctor's guidance. This does NOT have to be a lifelong sentence! Good luck!

best cure is confidence! Go up there like your better than everyone. I'm serious, I'm shy, but when I do public speaking, thats the key. I go up there thinking I'm the best and there is no one better than me, then I do the speech.

One thing you have to remember is, no matter how nervous you may be, you will be alive after you give your speech. Nothing to worry about, it's not like your fighting ninjas in a dark ally :D

Look at it this way, if you give a bad speech its not the end of the world. Nobody will think any less of you and even if they did it really doesnt matter because what matters most is what you think of you not what people think of you. You just have to assure yourself that everything will be fine because it will be no matter what happens. The key to success in anything is having a possitive mental attitude.

A simple way in getting rid of public speaking is simply Practicing. How?

Attend and participate at Toastmasters Club meetings near your place. You can find out more about toastmasters and clubs near your town at http://www.toastmasters.org

Do give it a try and experience it first hand. You'll see an improved difference in public speaking skills.

Practice the method at http://deeplyrelax.com See http://www.socialphobiaworld.com/modules.php & http://socialanxietysupport.com/ Paxil can help (see a doctor). You can try desensitisation therapy, making the speech in a mirror, then to family, then friends, first. Repeating the word: "easy", to yourself in your mind, as you do the breathing technique may also help.
