OK, so not every license has this. I just assumed because I had heard that licenses in other states besides mine (California) have it. But for those that have it, what does it mean?

Do not answer that it's the first letter of my last name because the first letter of my last name is B.

It's also not the class letter, as I have a class C license.

Varies from state to state! Here in NY there is no letter in most license numbers, in other states it's the first letter of the last name, in others still it seems totally random (much like the numbers in you license number)!
Could be a county or division of state code I guess ... maybe ask your local licensing agency?

As far as I am aware not every driver's license in the U.S. starts with a "D". I have had a license in two different states and neither of them started with a "D". One started with a "W" and the other with a "B". Maybe you could give an example of what you mean.

Perhaps is the class of license. For example, I have a class B commerical driver's license.

I dont have a "D" on mine, but i would imagine you live in a state that begines with the letter "D" I am liscensed in Kansas, Mine Starts with a "K". See a pattern, atleast thats what I think.
