One of my best friends here at college needs help. He owes his next payment of $5,000 to the college by the end of this month (March), or he can't complete the semester and will have to drop out. We're praying that we can get enough money to keep him here in college. He's a biochemistry major, and I don't want to see him lose his dreams.
Any ideas on how to get this money?

I don't think any one thing will resolve your problem here. There is a program that works with local grocery stores. You register your grocery card with their website and a portion of all the purchases go to paying for college.

Many colleges offer short term loans that have to be paid back before finals. He should first check with his college to see if he can get a short term loan. The best place to look into would be the financial aid counseling office at the Uni.
Once the applications are in place to get financial aid balls rolling, he should see what he can do to scrape the money together in the mean time. I'd be calling friends & family, trying to work extra hours, and whatever it takes.
Last if all else fails, I'd use a cash advance on my credit card-but only short term until a student loan comes through-paying 18% interest on a college education is not wise. If need be, get approved for a 0% interest card with enough time to float the balance until some better financing comes through.
Best of luck to your friend.

This story sounds a little thin to me. How could he not have known that the $5,000 wasn't paid for this semester? Has he been asleep since Christmas and just woke up two days ago? I am sure the college knew the tuition hadn't been paid and they didn't just let it ride until now.
I am sure something did happen that the $5,000 wasn't paid to the college for this semester, but lets not try to say nobody knew it for almost three months.

It's a little late to get the funds from a school loan or such. Try talking with the financial aid office. See if they can get him an extension. I would make sure to talk to someone in charge, not just the secretary. They may give him some time and some ways to get the funds. Good luck.
