We noticed a funny smell about two and a half hours ago and thought it was my son. i went to clean up and the burner had been turned on without a flame for i dont know how long. noone has complained of symptoms and i'm airing the house, should i be worried?

I think you mean carbon monoxide, not dioxide. CO and CO2 have no smell. What you smell was the sulfure compound put into to Natural Gas (CH4). I think the danger has past. The sulfur compound is heavier than air and lingers. The natural gas escapes pretty quickly.

Lucky for you it didn't build up to an explosive level. You were in more danger of starting a gas explosion than suffocating. But carbon monoxide posioning is pretty serious. But with the flame off I don't think you were exposed to that.

co2 is an oderless, invisible gas which is deadly. I would thoroughly air out the home....if you have any further questions of your safety, I'm sure your local Fire Department would be willing to help. Carbon Monoxide would be the more likely result of something burning,{ also a deadly gas). At any rate, ventilate your home.
