do i put egg in boiling water and then time 3 min or do i put in luke warm water and time 3 minutes once the water comes to a boil?

put in in the water & time once it boils. otherwise if you put it irectly into boiling water, it'll probably crack.

I find that the best way to cook a soft boiled egg is this:

Place the egg in enough water to cover it and bring to a full boil. When the water boils remove the pan from the heat and let set for about four-five minutes. As it sets, the water will be hot enough to cook the egg. After the 4-5 minutes, cool the water off quckly by pouring cold water in the pan. This will stop the cooking. Crack and enjoy.

If you want the egg to be hard boiled, let it set for a little longer before cooling it down.

Place the eggs in the pan. Cover with water to where the eggs are just covered. Place on stove over high heat. When it comes to a full rolling boil, go three minutes for soft boiled and 5-7 minutes for hard boiled.

so ok, so far every one is wrong...bring the water to a boil, place a ROOM temperature egg in the boiling water and cook for FOUR minutes. this will result in a perfect soft boiled egg every time since you start with boiling water and an egg that is close to the same temperature each time

buy a egg poacher, its usually about 4 eggs per tray. follow the direction.== a 3 minute egg is hard boiled.
