I've had the exact same problem. What helped me is the dragon stretch, butterfly stretch and modified hurdlers stretch.

Dragon stretch:
Get on the ground like a push-up. Point your toes outward from your body's center line on the ground. Now push your feet out until they are passed your knees which you now lower to the ground. You should now be resting on your lower legs and hands with your feet out a little from the knee width. Now press your body backwards like you're trying to push your butt to the ground. As you get more advanced with it put your forearms on the ground before pushing back.

Butterfly stretch:
Sit cross legged on the floor. Put the bottoms of your feet together and grab your feet around your toes/ball of the foot area to keep them together. Now pull them in toward your groin while trying to keep your knees down flat. Sit up straight, don't lean forward.

Modified hurdler:
Sitting flat on the ground with feet in front of you. Bring one leg to the inside and lay your foot flat against the inside of your other leg. Stretch toward the outstretched leg. Repeat on opposite side.

Then practice a lot. I was told to try doing sets of 20 kicks to the air on each side followed by more stretching and then 20 on each side to a heavy bag.

Hi there

There is no real fix with this one I'm afraid. Flexibility is the key to kicking above the waist. Side and box splits are really the best exercises but you will have to build up to this gradually. Just do 10 minutes every day and by the end of the month you should be there. Perfect technique just requires lots of good quality training. Not practice!

the Higher you get your kicks the better.

Go to Muay Thai gym and ask to spar with a couple guys. You'll change your mind about your kicks before 1st round end.
