In addition to using the pain medication of your choice, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.

OMG I feel your pain. I never had a toothache till a month ago and I have had a TERRIBLE time fixing my teeth. I was shocked when I went to the dentist. I needed a root canal on one tooth and the other tooth (which is still aching!) needs to be filled badly. I am doing that next week.

Call the dentist and tell him you can't sleep because of the tooth. He will probably call you in an antibiotic, penicillin, which will take care of any infection you have going on in your mouth. He will also call in a stronger pain medicine, such as vicodin to take at bedtime.

During the day alternate taking tylenol (the extra strength quick relief) and advil. Take it every time you can - don't wait for the pain to come back.

Gargle with room temperature water and sea salt. I put a T of the kosher salt into a cup of water. It is gross but really, really helps.

Brush the tooth when it is throbbing. Getting out little particles of food really help.

Apply and ice pack to the cheek where the problem tooth is.

Good Luck. I hope you feel better soon. SD

When I had a root canal problem on a Sunday night, I used a tropical anesthetic (rum). If you drink, having a couple can ease the pain a bit until you can get to the dentist. However, don't put off going to the dentist as in this case the pain can be taken care of. Feel better, mate!

Have you tried any pain killers?

How about some ice?

I can't say that I've ever had a toothache (gotta love genetics), except when I was teathing.

Also, try something warm like a nice warm glass of water.

P.S. Stay away from anything really sweet or sour. They'll make your teeth hurt really bad x.x

Take Motrin and apply Orajel Maximum Strength to the tooth and gum around it. This will not make it painless but will take the edge off. Then, call the dentist and see if you can get an earlier appointment.

For sure, don't put up with an appointment next week... call and tell your dentist that you're in a lot of pain. If they can't accommodate you call a dentist who will treat you immediately.

Oil of cloves (clove oil) works wonders. You can get it at your local pharmacy or health food store.
