Yeah go to Newport RI. By the time you get to where CT basically meets the ocean, you're almost in Newport anyway .
Just out of curiosity ? Why not LI ?
Jones Beach , Fire Island , The Hamptons Montauk ?

Mystic Seaport area is wonderful. You have historical areas to walk around, Beautiful beaches, and if you look at a guide book, you can see a whole bunch of really cool places to go not far from there, like 1 hour train rides and paddle boat rides up the Conn River, Gillette Castle, incredible place.

Can you tell I love visiting there?

I also thought Rhode Island too but if you want a beach, go to Misquamicut State Park (near Westerly), which is just as you enter Rhode Island. Then at night, hit Newport for dining, entertainment, etc.
