I'm baking cupcakes for some 2-3 year old children. I don't want to use icing, but would like to top the cupcakes off with... well, something. This is not going to be in my home, therefore I'm not looking for anything messy. Any simple and easy suggestions?

Use a little cream cheese and stick mini marshmallows on top.

Sprinkle lightly with mini chocolate chips just before baking.

A little spoonful of whipped cream when serving.

Bake them in an ice cream cone. Use flat bottom cones and colour the cake batter with food colouring before baking.

Bake a batch and allow them to cool. Poke with a skewer all over the tops. Make some jello, and pour on top of each cupcake while it is still runny. Put cupcakes in the fridge until jello has set.

You could try instant pudding mixed with a bit less milk to make it thicker (use low fat or fat free milk to cut out fat if you want). It will spread onto the cupcakes just fine once it has had time to thicken. Plus, this way you can make different flavours, chocolate, butterscotch, vanilla. That may defeat the purpose though, the kids will one each of all of the flavours. But it is a cheaper and easier alternative to baking different flavoured cupcakes.

If its sugar your trying to avoid..try mixing cream cheese with strawberry jam. its really yummy and colorful a lot less sugar and i guess you could argue that there getting a serving of dairy.

another idea is to get a food coloring pen and write HAPPY BIRTHDAY (or whatever the occasion) on top of the cupcakes (white cake) the kids won't knowthe difference at that age.

Ick I hate frosting...why don't you go to the grocery store and get like plastic cake toppings. Like they have little characters, flowers, numbers...etc
