A collection company did a hard pull on my credit report (ie: affects score and is shown when others pull my report). It is my understanding that they are allowed to do a soft pull (because the account was sold to them), but they are only allowed to do a hard pull if permission is given. No permission was given.

So, is this legal? If not, what are my options. They are paid, but getting to this point was entirely too difficult- they are one of those sketchy companies that refuses to give you anything in writing and has no regard for what is legal/illegal. If this is not legal I will pursue it out of principle.

The first link lists the reasons why you can sue collection agencies. Yes, it is illegal and can lead to a $1000 fine.

The second link is for sample letters you can send to collection agencies. There is one for disputing a credit inquiry.

Mariposa is right. Companies can only pull your report when you apply for a line of credit or if it's a permissable purpose such as a debt collection. If you didn't apply for a line of credit or if the debt doesn't belong to you, you can request the company to remove their entry.
