It is not doubled per sey. The cabbie will tell you the fare for one, two or three, etc. But it is nowhere near doubled. If you get a good person, they will sometimes let you load up with as many as you can get in for one flat rate price. Usually equal to just one fare.

If you can fit 4............or 5............same price. It's based on mileage, not individuals. That is why people try to share a ride if one is going "on the way" to the other's destination.
I'm sure the taxi owner wished it were doubled, though.

It is the same as if there were only 1 person was in the cab... that is why people like splitting cabs. You can get the same ride for half the price.
