If they are at ALL athletic, average should be 8 minutes or less. I wasn't even a great runner, but went under 13:00 for the 2-mile. In the service (last time I really ran much), I could party pretty much all night and still go under 13. So if young athletes can't do under 16 - well - they aren't very good athletes. If you set the bar too lazy, they can be lazy and get by. Make it tough on 'em.

It would depend on their current level of conditioning, and if they had been running in their other sports, and have kept up their conditioning. As a freshman/JV/varsityhockey conditioning coach, we first started our team running for 30 minutes three times a week in the late summer to initiate an endurance base. This went on for about 2-3 weeks, when we timed them for a mile run. Average times ranged from 6:30 - 9 minutes. As we increased more sprint work into their workouts (keeping the 30 minute run once a week), their mile times all came down as a result of their improved conditioning.
I would guess that your girls could run a mile in 7:30 - 9:30 for their first, early attempt, again depending on their fitness level. Two miles could be covered in 16:00 (for the highly conditioned girls) to 20 - 22 minutes for the others.

The average human can walk a mile in about 15 minutes at average pace. To run a mile, I would say a healthy, in shape teenager could probably run a mile in 10-12 minutes at an average pace.

thats too easy. non-athletes can usually run a 9:30 mile. an average female high school runner can usually do a mile in around 6 minutes. but for a team other than track & field, you could ease it down to 7 or 7.5 minutes. that should be doable if they play sports regularly. 2 miles make it 15 or 16 minutes. otherwise your players wont have to try and thus wont get in good shape.
