I am a male, and my hair is growing quite quickly. I really want to grow it out, but my mother and girlfriend keep telling me how aweful my current (lack of) style looks. The girlfriend is all for me growing it out, but hates the way it looks now.

The hair is currently about 3.5 inches long all around, and it's quite thick. I suppose my real question is, is there any real style for this middle stage?

I have very healthy, straight hair. I just haven't got it cut in ages, and it's quite bushy near the ears and back of head.

I don't believe there really is a style for the middle stage. My son grew his hair out last year and while it was growing it was looking a bit crazy also. However, he was determined and just dealt with each stage. Once it passes this middle stage you'll be fine. My son did gel it up when it was the length you have it now and did like the messy look - it worked and actually looked pretty good. His hair, too, is really thick - when he was nearing the end of the middle stage people were calling him Clark (from TV show Smallville). Just hang in there, be patient and stay determined, WITHOUT the worries of what you look like during the stages, to get the look that you want.

Use a good hair gel and sleek it back or make spikes
