women often develop knee pain when they begin excercising and sometimes the pain is chronic. one of the reasons for this is a strength imbalance between the quads and the hamstrings. Usually in women the hamstrings are stronger than the quads which puts greater pressure on knee tendons, joints, etc. This happened to me when I started running and doing the eliptical. A physical therapist friend of mine told me to ride the stationary bike for excercise. I did what she suggested and in just a couple of months my knee pain was gone and that was five years ago and not once have I had any problems with my knees at all. I still ride my stationary bike when I'm at the gym, but I bought a real bike and ride all the time now. I love it.

I am not sold on the elliptical...according to experts both burn about the same about of calories..

But each work different muscles groups..the bike obviously works the lower body and the elliptical works both ( if it has the ski poles or whatever those things are called).
My problem with both is they don't increase one's lung power...the diaphram is never engaged..so one never really feels like one is winded...
so you can run and run and never build up this form of endurance.
this is because the machine doesn't allow one to "bottom out'..which happens when one runs in the street..which also can be hard on the knees over time..
so if you think you can run on an elliptical and then run a marathon..think again...they are two differnt horses

I think it all depends on what kind of shape your in and how much you wish to spend...
I would forgo the bike..you can look in any paper's want ads and get someone's "barely used" nortic track..for a steal..
the nordic track is easy on the knees..works the whole body..
is easy to use right out of the box..
and made me sweat buckets
the elliptical is nice..but more expensive and does basically the same as the nordic track.
