Maybe the kid came back because he felt isolated (where are his parents if he's crying on the street alone?) and he finally found someone that he felt cared about something in the world. Realizing this after he ran away, he came back to the man to converse and possibly ask him why he is so kind in a world gone so wrong. Smart kid.
