The rapture will occur when Jesus returns on the clouds of glory to judge mankind for their sins. During the rapture all the believers in heaven and on the earth will be gathered together in the clouds of heaven with Christ. Believers that will be living on this earth during the time the rapture occurs will be instantly changed into their new glorified spiritual bodies. Their mortal bodies will turn incorruptible since nothing corruptible inherits incorruption.
The unsaved dead shall be resurrected for judgment and all the unbelievers left on this earth will try to hide themselves from the wrath of God and from the face of the Lamb.
At that time the entire universe will be destroyed by fire.

Yes. In the twinkling of an eye, they will be gone. Then there will be a 7 year period where the anti-christ will reign on earth. This is when the plauges will come, the mark of the beast will be given and non-believers for a time will have a chance to accept Christ and not take the mark. They may be killed for not taking the mark. At the end of this time period, Christ will have his second coming to earth. A great set of books to explain it all is the Left Behind Series....it really put all of Revelations in perspective for me. It's written in todays times and clearly explains alot. It can't tell you everything because we don't have ALL the information...but the series is very informative. Really makes you think and NOT want to be here for that 7 years!

In short, yes. The Scripture describes the moment thus: "And the dead in Christ (saved people who died before the Rapture) shall rise first. Then those who are alive(believers at that time) and remain shall be caught up in the clouds to meet Him in the midway air."

1 Thess 4:16-18 explains the Rapture of Gods church clearly.
God will spare His faithful followers from His judgment on a sinful world. Once God removes His followers, He will remove His Holy Spirit (Restrainer) along with us and satan will be given almost complete control of those who remain.
God will keep a remnant (144,000) on this earth during those days in order to help the Jewish people and all people, to put their faith in Christ Jesus.

Yes. Please read this scripture. Caught up together is the Rapture.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 - Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

It's a delicate piece of fiction by which some of the people who believe in the horrors of the "end times" persuade themselves that they will be spared the inconvenience of having to go through all that by being whisked away to heaven before it all happens.

Something like that. Man, I can't wait for everyone to line up at the pearly gates with Ted Haggard behind them...

No, it is a misinterpretation of scripture which talks about the end of the first resurrection.
