I just had a "Perio Scale/Root Plan" done today... Yes, that's the price. Basically, it's a deep cleaning where they inject you with pain medicine and use tools to clean below the gum line. This is very common for people that don't have regular cleanings (I know better now!) and can help reduce the symptoms of early gum disease. My mouth is a little tender and they usually do one side at a time. (I had the right side done last week.)
Irrigation - They use a prescription type of "mouthwash" to kill the bacteria in your mouth after scraping, planing.
Antimicrobial meds - Mine were $35. They put the med in the deeper pockets where your gums have receded the most to help your gum disease clear up.
Oral eva - is just an exam, evaluation
I can't remember what the prophylaxis adult was...
Expensive, huh?

Prophylaxis Adult $86 (Dental Cleaning)
Comprehensive Oral Eva $60 (Dental Exam)
Perio Scale/Root Plan $436 (Detailed cleaning/scraping under the gumline)
Irrigation W/Chlorhexd $320 ( ?)
Antimicrobial Meds $40 (?)
The costs can vary depending on where you live. The 3 terms i recognised seem just a little high from where I am in the mid-atlantic, but may be within usual and customary rates elsewhere.

prophylaxis means preventative
comprehensive oral eva--comprehensive oral evaluation, a complete inspection
Antimicrobial meds--some medicine they put on/in a tooth.
Prices??? Don't know, but now I wish I would have went to dental school instead of nursing school. LOL. Prophylaxis could mean the sealants they sometimes put on teeth as a barrier, usually last a few years--$86 sounds about right. $60 for oral exam is reasonable.

X Rays - BW taken are Bite Wing x-rays. These are X-Rays taken of the teeth to check the general health of the bone/roots etc. They will show any caries (decay) bone levels and calculus (tartar) present They are routinely taken every 2-3 years when you have a check up. Bone levels indicate how well you are doing with oral hygiene. If the bone, which holds the teeth, is receding it could be due to poor oral hygiene. Bacteria not cleaned from the gum margins causes inflammation which, if not regularly cleaned away by brushing/flossing, erodes away the bone making it shrink away from the tooth. In time, the teeth can become loose. If your gums bleed when brushing, are red/swollen then you have gum disease and need to visit the hygienist for oral hygiene instruction. S&P is Scale & Polish - which is when you are advised to see the hygienist for general oral hygiene instruction/scaling. Not sure about VCG!

1.PROPHYLAXIS=ADULT CLEANING $=FAIR
2.COE=FAIR
3.PS/RP=DEPENDS ON HOW MANY QUADRANTS ARE DONE.1 QUAD= VERY EXPENSIVE, UNLESS IT'S SURGICAL.IF IT'S 4 QUADS THEN=REASONABLE.
4.IRRIGATION, DEPENDS IF PER TOOTH=REASONABLE
5.MEDS=USUAL PRICE
AS YOU CAN SEE ALREADY DENTISTRY IS NOT LIKE GETTING YOUR MUFFLER CHANGED BY THE SHOP. THERE IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE THINGS USED, BUT THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE TO DO IT CORRECTLY.
