To add UV filter to protect the lense is important but does it degrade the picture quality? Which UV filter is recommended?

Just get a decent quality like Tiffen, Hoya or B+W. (That's a brand - not "black and white.") It makes no sense to put a $9.99 piece of junk on the front of your optically perfect $999 lens. If you want to use the filter to protect the lens, you can even get clear optical glass from the top filter makers.

I'll second Dr Sam. Get a good quality filter. The best protection against bumps is probably the lens hood. When at the ocean or desert, I use a UV filter to protect the front element against conditions. Also it does help cut through haze.

Any extra glass that you add to your lens increases the chance of lens flare or ghosting. Also it decreases sharpness by a tiny bit, which is usually not noticeable. So go ahead, use it and don't worry.

No it will not affect the picture. If any thing it may enhance some details. What kind. They are all the same. Only the size differs per camera lense
