cavities are holes, not brown spots, it could be staining, but I would have though the detist would have polished it off, maybe just go back and have him check it,

It's possible. Even cavities that get filled can get cavities again underneath or around the filling. The BEST way to keep from getting more cavities is to forgo ALL refined sugar and brush your teeth within 5 to 10 minutes of eating. If you can't do that, then swish some water around your mouth. Small cavities can heal themselves, and remineralize. Make sure to brush 2 times a day and floss once a day.

These sort of surface defects are much more common than you might think. If you can get your fingernail to 'click' over the edges it could be a small cavity but if the dentist ignored it I think you should relax and mention it again at your next check up.
If you want to make sure that the possible early cavity doesn't get bigger just make sure to wipe a little fluoride toothpaste on to the spot before you go to bed so that the fluoride can toughen up the tooth overnight. Doing this every night should protect it. Oh, and keep it clean and cut down on the sugar!

It sounds like it could be a brown spot lesion.
A very early type of carious lesion, probably been there for years, if on a surface yu can see then unlikely to cavitate unless you don't keep it clean.
He probably noticed it as they are very common but wouldn't have remarked on it because they don't require any specific treatment if in a visible area.

the dentist if hes any good usually does a indept check of your mouth. poking around in your mouth with that horrible pointy metal thing that he has. so if there was anything there he would have said it. but by all means make another appointment(if its free), otherwise dont bother, go and have a couple of pints or bring your partner out for a meal with the money.

if you went to the dentist and he said it wasnt a cavity, i'd go with his diagnosis, he is a trained professional who saw your tooth...how can people on here who aren't dentists tell you what it is?....maybe its tartar? lol

Call your dentist and describe your problem. They'll determine if its worth going back for another checkup.

sounds like discoloration around calcium spots...I think that is what they are...
I got them on my back teeth when I had braces. You can't tell anymore but on the edges of them they will stain. It is annoying.

Switch to a better toothbrush and use it twice daily. Cheap toothbrushes result in stains like this.
