its just the mien you were raised and sometimes you cant think of what to say so you say ummm to take up the time. As for 'like' its just something you dont notice your saying. Its not that stupid people say ummm and like thats not it, i say it all the time and guess what i have a 4.0 GPA and i have some pretty damn good street smarts. Only small people find errors in others when they see so many in themselves.

It's a filler - they need time to think up, ummm, the next, like, ummm, word.

It is a "hesitation" word. When u r at a loss for words.
Like, And, umm, so, a. Are all used as fillers until your brain kicks in. It makes you feel like you are listening to a "slow" brained person and it is really distracting in public speaking.

If you are conscious that you do this, it can be cured.

Contrary to popular belief, "like" and "um" are not always filler words, stalling measures, or signs of a limited vocabulary. I use them all the time, and I scored a valedictorian in highschool vocabulary. They're just habit words some people pick up and use, like "aint" or "yall" in no way are they specific signs of ignorance, low vocabulary, or lack of something to say.

Well, I think it's because its commonly practised by almost everyone. So, people just took it up and use it when communicating with others.

For others, it might just be habit. They used 'like' and 'umm' so much that it's like second nature.

Though its quite possible that they don't have much to say. Hehe..

Because their brain doesn't work as fast as their mouth.
Some people are just too carefull with their words, too. They self-edit while speaking. It's super annoying when you're listening so someone's umm and uhh during training sessions and other public speaking events for me, so much so, I begin to count the pauses.

If they do that after everything, then it's probably become a habit of theirs, a word that comes out of their mouth unconsciously because they're used to always saying it.
