I'm looking for some good spots in New York City to sit down and read for a while, both indoors and outdoors. I know I can go to the library or Central Park, but I'm looking for something different. I don't drink coffee or tea, so I'm not big into cafes, but if you have a cool spot you're willing to share, I'd love to hear! Thanks!

This is a great question!

I love to read also, so here are some nice spots:

- Sit in the lobby of a great hotel - The Plaza is closed, but there are plenty of others like the Pierre and the Waldorf Astoria (although you might end up doing more people watching than reading....)

- Public spaces in office buildings - The Sony building on Madison Ave. has a nice lobby, and I also really like the atrium of the building right next door on Madison between 56th & 57, Citicorp Center has a nice seating area, but it has gotten more security concious and not as quiet recently.

- For an outside spot - Bryant Park right behind the main public library on 42nd Street, is lush, quiet and they have free Wifi!

-I also like spots along the rivers - almost anywhere in Riverside Park on the West side and one of my favorites - Carl Shurz Park on East 88th & East End Ave.

Happy Reading!

The promenade near Wagner Park overlooking the Hudson.

The "balcony" on the water at Southstreet Seaport (nice outdoor seating)

The promenade on the water in Brooklyn Heights

The Boardwalk in Brighton Beach or Coney Island

The area between the buildings on 52nd and 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth

The lower level (where the restaurants are) in Grand Central Terminal - sitting in a big upholstered leather chair.

When I had to commute from Brooklyn to Manhattan every day, I got to read a lot more - I love to read on the subway.

All good responses. Bryant Park has karmic advantage in that it is the roof of the belowground stacks of the main NY Public Library.

I would add the Hungarian pastry/tea room across from The Cathedral of St John way up on the West Side.

When the weather gets warmer, also try the park on the West Side Hwy and Christopher St. You can walk way out to the end of the pier and read and also watch the cruise ships and other boats go by.

How approximately Queens Botanical backyard? they have pleasing quiet paths, and there are some benches under shady bushes. you need to attempt The coffee Pot in enormous apple. or you may bypass to South highway Seaport. an excellent sort of places to sit down down and study there, and there is many times a intense-high quality breeze because of the fact that's good by means of the water. attempt The Cloisters. they have an exquisite backyard backyard with tables and chairs under a coated walkway. I had a e book team communicate there as quickly as and it substitute into suited. Quiet, cool, and so fantastically.
