the plants were created before the sun was.
Actually, this is a good argument for Christians who believe in long periods of time between sections of the creation, because plants can't survive without the sun, so by that reasoning, the creation must have been 6 literal 24 hour days.

The plants were created first, which wasn't a problem, because the Sun was created the next day. I'm sure the plants could live without sun for one day.
However, if one believes in the Day/Age theory, where each day represents millions of years, you have a problem.

The King James Bible:
1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
1:2 - And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
1:3 - And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
1:4 - And God saw the light, that it was good:
So I'd say that God created the earth first, then only the sun.

Then God said, "Let the earth produce grass, and herbs, and fruit trees, all yielding after their own kind," and it happened; And God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.
So he made the plants. Then...
Then God said, "Let there be lights in the heavens; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days, and years." God made two great lights; the sun to rule by day and the moon to rule by night. He also made the stars.
So he made the plants then the sun but there was already light before the sun.

The plants were created first.
God created the plants on the 3rd day.
Then God said, "let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." (Gen. 1:11)
He created the sun on the 4th day.
And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to seperate the day from the night.......(Gen 1:14)
