The weather can vary. I was there in December and we sat outside at the South Seaport in light jackets and walked everywhere and it was gorgeous. That same day, they got 10" of snow in Chicago. October is decent generally. I like to stay in Midtown, but that is a preference. If you are going to spend a lot of time in The Village or SOHO, you might want to stay closer in one of the smaller hotels. Midtown is pricy, but there are some decent rooms for less than $300 per night.

In October, the weather should be a little chilly. You should go midtown.
