10 fish. Just two of them are dead (how can fish drown though?!). But that's still 10 fish.

You have two fish. "Drowned" is actually not specific to drowning and dying; instead it means that you inhale water. Fish don't actually INHALE water, but if two do and none of the others do, you have two fish.

The answer is twelve.
Saying ten is too obvious; & this is a riddle; therefore, you actually started out with twelve fish & you just seperated the number. Simple addition combined with logic.
