I have really bad anxiety when I go into this one class...because I'm afraid of being embarrassed. I know it sounds really stupid but I think that if I accidentaly drop a book or something that I will turn really red. Part of this is that I don't have any friends in that class (At ALL. Like not even someone I could ask a pencil from.) so if I do something stupid I can't make fun of myself.

So I end up worring about being embarrassed and then I think I turn red and its a big cycle. Its really really bad and one time I even got nauseous!

Help! How do I calm down?

i had the same problem but i turned it all around as soon as i found some friends. if you ever see anybody from your class outside of class, talk to them. you can talk about the class and how hard/easy it is, or about the test you just took or will take. you can also take your time leaving the class once it is over and someone might even start talking to you.

Social anxiety can cause these feelings, which can also lead to severe depression,
http://www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/ds...

if not you could be suffering from Generalized Anxiety
Disorder..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/general_anx...

There is hope; I've been there, and still am there, it is a long, hard struggle. I recommend
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cognitive_b... worked best for me, with mild anti-anxiety meds. I suffered from social anxiety for over 15 years. I've tried individual therapy, and group therapy and studied psychology for 10 years, as a profession, but also with the hope to cure myself.

Depending on your comfort level, you could go to a psychologist that practices CBT and specializes in anxiety disorders, seek a group therapy, or create one. Usually those that do attend the group therapy are a bit more high functioning because as you know, it can be difficult to speak in a group.

Another idea is to see if there are any local research studies being conducted that you could participate in.

The program that finally worked the best for me is this one: http://www.socialanxiety.us/findinghelp.... and I was lucky enough to have a structured behavioral group to go along with it. Sometimes the people that actually attend this program come back home and form groups.

I recommend a mild anti-anxiety med in addition to CBT therapy.

Any questions, let me know ... I can't tell you how much this has improved my life!

Hi Sam,

This is a good chance to practice overcoming something that's "all in your head" and then feeling powerful that you did it!

One thing you can do is to go to a quiet place tonight (your room?) and visualize walking into the school room you're afraid of. Let yourself feel the negative thoughts. In your mind, walk over to your desk and sit down. Take deep, slow breaths and let them out slowly. Now visualize dropping a pencil (or some other thing that will make you feel embarrassed). Imagine all the bad things that will happen. Someone will look at you and think you're dumb, or just notice you, making you feel embarrassed, or whatever...) Go ahead and go with those feelings...Now imagine that your face is red and other people are turning and looking at you. Keep up the deep breathing...Now imagine something good coming of this experience...A person catches your eye, perhaps a handsome guy, and smiles...Or a girl you don't know smiles at you and seems to say "Hey, I just noticed you...Maybe we can be friends". Or perhaps someone reaches out and gets to your pencil before you do and hands it to you...and smiles or laughs or says something funny! Go with the feelings you're having now! Don't you feel good! Now you can draw upon those feelings when you're in class and draw strength from them! Good luck! I'm sure you're a wonderful person! One day high school will be over and you will survive it...

What your suffering from appears to be a mild case of general anxiety or social anxiety disorder. I'm certainly not a Dr. and can't diagnose you, but from what you described, it appears that you will benefit from psychotherapy, specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Anxiety is the result of the misfiring of your body's natural stress reaction or can simply be your brain reliving a stressful event when one doesn't necesarrily exist. CBT is designed to analyze the thoughts and actions that occur which leads to your feelings of "anxiety". Your therapist will help you learn what leads to the feelings and how to change certain behaviors, that will correct your stress reaction, preventing anxiety in virtually any situation. This works really well in combination with medication in the begining and over time you'll develop the tools to deal with this on your own.
