the sugar in fruits is known as fructose...unlike starch, which ultimately gets broken down into maltose, fructose does not give you a sensation of satisfaction. that means that you can shovel down loads and loads of food containing fructose and never satisfy your sugar craving, although you are getting the sugar at the end of the day.
i suppose these sites tell you to stay away from fruits because they will provide you with calories even though they do not satisfy your sugar cravings. hence, you will eat other sugary foods to satisfy yourself, and in the end, you may end up taking more sugar than you have planned. only in this way are fruits fattening.
however, fruits have so many benefits, that it would be absolutely stupid to stop eating fruits. your body will suffer such horrible consequences.
fruits rock!

It is true that fruit has a sugar in it but as with everything else, you should eat moderate portions of fruit. Fructose is natural sugar but a simple sugar and in moderation should not be anymore fattening than anything else you eat. check out the websites below for tips on losing weight.

Fruits do have a fair amount of sugar in them. Cheese, onions, peas, corn, bread, pasta, potatoes, tomatoes, etc. etc. all have sugars. Most foods do have some type of sugar in them whether natural or added.
If you are dieting to lose weight the trick is in knowing how much sugar is in what and how many you can safely have. You should not stop eating fruits all together unless you are allergic to it. They are good for you. They also have vitamins, minerals, fibre; and they taste good too.

fruit offers all sorts of vitamins, as well as keeping you regular (which HELPS with weight loss).
yes, some fruits have a lot of sugar, which can spike your blood sugar and throw your body for a loop. or, it can be a much needed boost. when i played soccer as a kid, mid-game we were fed grapes or oranges to hydrate us and boost our energy.
for the sake of your digestion system, it's not recommended to mix fruits and vegetables. mixing causes gas; and doesn't allow your body to fully take in the nutrients.
grapefruit is excellent for revving up your metabolism.
losing weight:
you can do a crash course diet, but that won't help you eat right or be healthy. set goals, and create a plan to get there. cut as many chemicals as possible out of your diet. you should know what all of the ingredients in your food is. FILL your cart in the PRODUCE aisle. eat greens (the greener the better) at least twice a day. kale is my favorite. :) do fruit in the morning, and as a snack after working out.
think happy thoughts! you are beautiful!

Your suspicion is right. That is complete misinformation that is spread by the Atkins advocates. No one gets fat from eating too many apples, pears, or oranges. Now too many cheeseburgers is a different story.
Also, there is the myth that a gram of carbs adds more fat than a gram of fat.
The truth is that everything that is added as fat must be converted to fat (except for fat itself). It must also supply 9 calories for every gram of fat that it adds but a gram of carbs only has 4 calories. So for their assertion to be true, we would have to figure out how to get 9 calories out of only 4. This is simply impossible.
This is what happens when a nation takes fat loss advice from someone who was obese (Dr. Atkins).
Here are some links with some extra info.

If you're following some fad diet then maybe that's the case, but eating lots of fruits and vegetables is good for you and any dietician can tell you so.
