Some go by what Paul said in I Cor 5:8, "We are confident, yes well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."
Others believe in soul sleeping. They based this on Ecc. 9:5, where it states the dead know nothing. But I think this chapter is speaking of death coming to all and just saying that when you are alive you still have hope because the living knows its going to die but the dead know nothing. There is no more connection to life as we know it once you are dead. It does not necessarily mean that your mind is idle until Jesus comes.
Until our Lord's ascension, all who died went into sheol or hades, but the righteous dead were separated by a great gulf, fixed, and impassable (Abraham's Bosom-Paradise) (Luke 16:26).
When Jesus ascended into Heaven, He took with Him those who were in Paradise and now the righteous dead are in heaven with Christ.
I believe what Paul said that you close you eyes here and open them where the Lord is. It could be in another part of Heaven since Scripture states there are 3 heavens. Who knows.
I believe only the body is in the grave waiting to be resurrected to its new glorified body.

Yes, I believe that when people die, they remain in a "dreamless sleep" until Christ returns. This is the only belief that is supported by Scripture. Everywhere in the Bible, death is called a "sleep".
Can you imagine how angry Lazarus would have been, if he had been up in Heaven, enjoying bliss, and then Jesus yanks him back down to this sin-sick world?
Isn't it strange that, when a guy comes back from the dead, and he is surrounded by witnesses, no one ever asked him "What was it like?" If that happened today, every microphone from every TV and radio station would be in his face.
The fact is, Lazarus didn't say anything about it, because there was nothing to say. For all he knew, he had been "asleep". Even Christ said, "I go to wake him up." If they were just talking about Lazarus "taking (normal) rest in sleep, couldn't ANYone have woken him up?
Another point - if our (dead) loved ones were already up in Heaven, would it be "heaven" sitting there watching your loved ones suffer and make poor choices? It would be Hell!
Lastly, why would Christ need to "come back" for his people if they're already in Heaven?

Hi,
The Souls of people are the thoughts of God.... God creates our souls by thought, and then breathes into his thoughts and we are born spirit. God has future plans for us, although, we have free will once on earth. But we must learn many things first. So we have a choice before we are sent on our way, do we want to stay spirit and do his will by helping in some way, or go and become born and become redeem person. And when that person dies, not only does that persons last breath goes back to God, but also the souls-spirit does as well, if that where it chose to go.

Just because science says that a soul is not there doesn't mean that it isn't. Religiously speaking, I have no answer for this, though I've wondered it myself. I've asked around and got many different answers. In the end, it's up to you to research and find out for yourself where a soul goes. I think that your soul goes to heaven or hell right when you die and that there is no limbo.

It not matter what I think, because God going to do what He think.
I hear most of what people believe and it OK with me. I guess I will be with the Lord. But, maybe we be hanging out together in Hades. I respect that thought.

At death we are resting in the grave until judgement day.
(John 5:27-29) 27 And he has given him authority to do judging, because Son of man he is. 28 Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.
(Acts 24:15) 15 and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.

Christians believe that when one doesn't go to heaven that you are in Hades as a waiting place to go to Hell. Not to go to heaven.

Based on the following scriptures I believe that the soul of a Christians goes to heaven and the lost goes to hell.
Luke 16:20 - And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
Luke 16:23 - And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke 16:24 - And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luke 16:25 - But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Revelation 6:9 - And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

There are literally millions of people who have had near-death experiences, even (former) atheists who now know that you leave your body and go on to meet people who have died before you, and eventually will meet God. It is a place of learning and preparation for eternity. Most who die stay there because it is like going home for them. They don't want to return to earth.
Our bodies will "sleep" in the grave until we are resurrected by the Lord, when our spirit and body will be reunited forever.
Atheists are shocked to learn that their entire life philosophy was a sham, and have much to learn to catch up with their wiser earthly brothers and sisters - those who know the truth already.

You are absolutely correct. The Bible teaches that we are a soul, not that we have a soul, that souls die, and that the dead await the resurrection in their graves completely unknowing. The doctrine of immortality of the soul came from Greek philosophy and it is a concept that Jesus made fun of in his parable of Lazarus and the rich man.
