I went to a banquet for work today and I was surprised how many of my coworkers did not even know which was the salad fork. I know not everyone has money to go to fancy places but there are books on how to set a table and table manners. My parents took us to nice restaurants so we knew how to behave in public and how to eat correctly. Then on big holidays like Thanksgiving we had to take out the book on how to set the table and set a formal table. I would be so embarrassed if I was a grown adult with my supervisor board of trustees and CEO of the company and did not know which fork to use. Why don’t more parents add this to their plans of what to teach their children?

I agree. Most parents allow their children to eat with their fingers and slurp. They never take the time to teach them proper etiquette in any aspect of life. The one thing I can't stand is hearing kids or even adults say that something (food) is gross. Half the time they have'nt even tried it, they just don't like the sound of it! Also, while were on the subject, why have so many people stopped placing their napkin on their lap? I actually saw a grown woman wipe her face with a napkin that was on the table near her plate. She actually lowered her face to the table where her napkin lay!

I agree with Bunny. I can't stand when the parents let the brats stand up on the booth seats or chairs, don't they realize other people have to sit there after them? Or the kids that just scream because they are not getting what they want, or scream for no reasonn. Or they let them run around the place.

Parents - I would not go to Chuck E Cheese and expect your brats to be quiet. Why do I have to put up with their bratty behavior in an adult restaurant?

By the way, the reaso the parents don't teach manners is they think it will "damage" their brat in some way if they correct the bratty behavior.

Having a special fork for salads is pretentious and ridiculous. I would feel like such a tool if I cared about which fork was which. Most restaurants, even nice ones, don't have specialized forks because most people today are sensible enough to know how stupid this is. You obviously come from a snooty family who cares more about the quality of the dinnerware than the quality of the company. Give me good decent people who would rather relax and enjoy each other's company than berating each other because they prefer common sense to snobbery.

the easiest way to know which utensil to use at a fancy restaurant is just to start at the outside and work your way in. A lot of places have salad forks that are the same size as your regular fork, so it doesn't matter which you use anyway. But I agree that children's manners at dinner and at restaurants are horrible. I'll never let my children act that way.

I agree, parents should. My mom taught me how to set a table properly and which utensil to use for which course. I in turn have taught my daughter. She still asks me which fork to use somtimes, but I'm don't doubt that she would do OK in a formal setting if I wasn't there.

But todays families are so busy, I bet most families don't sit down for a family meal anymore.

I hate it when your at a fancy restaurant, and your paying alot of money to have a nice night out, and some family has screaming kids, and don't have the sense or manners to take their child out, so it doesn't ruin everyone else's dinner. Or, they let their child lean over the back of their chair and stare at you, or worse yet, ask questions of you, while they pick their nose. it's really bad for the waitress, because they generally leave food all over the floor around the high chair, and practically no tip. Mom, dad, go to McDonalds, or leave the brats at home, OK?

I don't even know what a salad fork looks like. I'm sure it looks like a "fork".

As long as it gets food in your mouth why does it matter what you use?

Why so many choices on a fork or spoon. It all GOES TO THE SAME place....and comes out the same way. Why does it matter HOW or WHAT you eat it with?

As long as food isn't hanging out your mouth or ur chewing with ur mouth open or making a mess everywhere shouldn't matter what u eat it with.

kids are cute no matter how they eat and how they behave and they are not the one to blame.. its their parents fault.
