I have gotten to know 3 black cats quite well in my lifetime. The first was Dr. Katz, the second my baby Wicket, and the third my friend's cat Jada. All three prefer to drink water fresh from the tap. Does anybody else have a black cat that does this? I don't think it's odd that a cat would want fresh tap water (even though ours is so disgusting I wouldn't serve it to my worst enemy), but I find it odd that the three BLACK cats in my life have all loved to drink water from the tap.

Incidentally, for those of you following me this evening, I'm not sure why I'm asking all these cat questions. I just took my youngest to the vet this evening to be neutered tomorrow, but these questions are quite besides the point.

I do have a black cat and have owned other black cats, I haven't known any of them to drink from the tap, but I do have a Blue Tortie Balinese (Long haired siamese) that loves to drink from the tap, she is the only one i've noticed doing it. I do know of many other cats who do it though especially certain breeds such as Bengals. I think it's because the water from the tap is cooler and tastes fresher and it's instinct for cats who would drink from a running stream in the wild (pools of water without continual flow become stagnant). Cats hate plastic water bowls, the water gets warm and tastes fowl (no haven't tasted it but know from filling plastic containers to drink from, eventually you can taste plastic). You can try ceramic water bowls, it keeps the water cooler and fresher (I have four around the house but my cat still likes to drink from the tap). You can also buy fountains for cats who prefer to drink.

We have had our black cat for almost a year. His mother was killed when he was 2 weeks old. He weighed 8 ozs when we got him and of course, we spoiled him. We had him in the water all the time massaging him so he would poop and pee so he got used to the water. Then we let him drink from the kitchen faucet as he got older. We thought it was cute. Not anymore! Now that he is older his black hairs are all over the counter and I am constantly wiping them. I got a spray bottle for water and started spraying him every time he went on the counter. I would only spray him on his body, not his face. We've been doing this for a week now. He has gotten so defiant and fresh. He cries for the faucet, is knocking over his water bowl, (out of spite) and isn't drinking much water at all. I tried to re-train him to drink from the bathroom faucet but when he does he does this digging thing and pushes the water all over the place and then drinks. We have decided to let him go back to the kitchen faucet. I'm afraid he's not getting enough water because he always drank a LOT from there. I'll just have to constantly wipe the counters.

My cat Tika (black and white short haired) has preferred fresh tap water to anything more than day old in her dish. She used to drink from the bathtub tap, especially after someone had just showered. Sinced we've moved we now serve her brita firltered water. And since then we hardly find her drinking from the tub.

Most cats do prefer to drink fresh water (even if it is from the city treatment plant).

My husband and I have a black cat that he's had for almost 15 years. He and I have been married for almost 6. Julie used to prefer water from the tap when she was allowed to jump up on the counter. I don't allow that so she drinks from the same bowl as the other animals.

I had a black female we called Squeakers. She liked drinking water from the tap. However EVERY cat I have had, orange, gray, and Siamese love drinking water from the tap. My husband and I make jokes about our cats wanting to be big "hunters" and hunting their water rather than being handed a bowl of water.

I guess it is just "fresher."

I have a black cat that likes to drink running water so I got her a special cat waterer that has a little pump in it to give her a little waterfall to drink out of. I have 4 other cats that just love it, too.

Cats just want to have fun.

Yeah. My cousin's two black cats drink fresh tap water. But so do my 2 tabbies and my b+w shorthair. So I guess it depends on the cat's taste.
