This bird (we think its a female cardinal) comes to my porch window and sits in a bush up against it. Then it flies into the window and lands back on the bush. This repeats over and over again for about an hour. It now started doing it to other windows on our house.

We do not want to get rid of the bird; we like birds and have a pet parakeet. What type of food can we give it to keep it satisfied? What if we opened a window one day? It sure seems like it wants inside!

It is definately a dull brownish color with a vivid orange or red beak. It's not that we don't want the bird on our windows, but it almost seems as if the bird enjoys it.

The bush that it sits on is maybe 6 inches or less away from the window, so it's not like the bird could really hurt itself from hitting the window. It hops, flies into the window, then quickly turns right around and goes back to its perch on the bush.

My mom said that while I was away, it went to a different window of our house and just sat there watching us. Maybe the bird has a secret message or some underlying motivation.

What kinds of food can we leave out to keep it comfortable? I wonder if it would 'make friends' through the window with out parakeet. He usually gets excited when he sees other birds outside.

She is probably seeing her reflexion in the glass, spring is here and the birds are in breeding mode. For cardinals this means that not only is the male chasing out intruding males but the female is going after females trespassing on her territory. Interesting to note that the female won't help the male chase out other males and vice-versa.

You can try placing metal strips that blow in the wind outside your window, birds seem to hate those. You can also try placing the silhouette of a raptor, or some old Cd's on the outside of the window to try and discourage them. If she still attacks your window after that try covering the outside of your window, if you can put a screen those work well.

As for a feeder try placing a platform feeder (or another feeder that is wide enough for them to land) with black oil sunflower seeds and she'll love those. Make sure to either have the feeder right beside the window (so they don't have momentum when they hit the window...) or better yet 30 feet away to minimize the risks of her and other birds hitting the window.

Putting stickers on the window is a great idea. The bird does not want in your house. He is most likely seeing a reflection of the outdoors and doesn't understand the concept of windows. It is very common for birds to attempt flying through windows only to break their necks doing so. Very sad!

Another idea is to place a bird feeder on your window with suction cups. That way he'll be more likely head for the feeder instead of flying into your window. And you'll get a close up of him by doing so too!

Good luck!

The bird is probably a male by this behavior, and it is natural in the spring. First, the bird is male if it is red, females are brownish with red markings. The male cardinal is seeing his reflection in your window. Cardinals are very territorial during breeding time, spring; and he thinks he sees another male in his territory. You can get the window dirty so it does not reflect so well, sometimes putting tape on it will do this also. The behavior is natural, but he can break his neck. It will stop later in the year when his mind is not on breeding but on raising his babies.

It most likely sees the reflection of the trees or sky in the window, and thinks it is an extension of that. Put stickers on your windows or close the blinds during the time of day it most often happens. That cardinal is lucky it hasn't severely injured itself.

Take off your clothes and give the Cardinal a show. I hear that they enjoy such things.
