The Bible seems to imply that if someone didn't get a chance to hear about Jesus, then God will judge them based simply on what they know about right & wrong (Romans chapters 1 & 2, for example).
---edit---
In response to "THX 1138", below, grace via Jesus is the go to Heaven free card, not the other way around. Being judged by merit is no picnic, because no one is perfect. We are not told in the Bible exactly what happens to thous who never heard of Jesus, but judgement by merit seems very difficult according to the few passages that seem to mention it.

It's nice to think that they all receive "Get Into Heaven Free" cards. Judge a person on his own merit, wow, what a novel idea! But if it works for some, why not for all? What's so damned much better about this Savior-Who-Died-For-You system? Now you don't even have have to have merit to get in, just faith in something that an intelligent thinking person knows is malarkey. It makes intelligence a curse and definitely makes hearing the good news less than good news, more like a death sentence, "Hey, pal, believe this or else!" "Aw, dang, and I was doing so good on my own!" It takes the incentive for being moral out of the picture for everyone if the next life is the only thing that matters. The amount of apologetics dreamed up to patch all the holes and inconsistencies in the Bible always amazed me! Personally, it's this life that matters to me, so I'm not going to worry about the next one since I'm not really sure that there is any such thing. I'll just be the best moral person I know how to be while I'm still here on this Earth. If there is a God, he can do with me however he pleases, intimidation doesn't work.
"Dear God, Did you forget? You gave me a brain. If you want me to believe this stuff, could you please just make it a little more believable?

They knew the Holy Spirit (you don't need a Bible to know HIM) at one time.
The "Great Spirit".
Then they got into Error.
