Hi. I am seriously considering adopting an adult dog. But I don't really know how to go about doing it. It has to be a medium to large size dog. Should I go to a breed rescue or an animal shelter? The animal shelter in my town is bad-the dogs have bad diseases and stuff.

I have been to my local shelter and all the animals there are really bad off sick. It's sad. : ( And my local shelter will sell ANYONE a dog or cat for $10-that's it. no adoption papers or nothing.
>>I thought about rescuing a retired racing greyhound.

Anywhere there are lots of homeless animals, disease is a possibility. Most of the problems (although not all) that shelter pets have, though, are minor and fixable!

You wouldn't want someone to write you off because you have the sniffles, so give those pets a chance. Breed rescues are OK too, but don't limit yourself.

There are many sources, breed rescue organizations, shelters, and people who for some reason can no longer keep their dog. A good book to read on the subject of working with a rescued adult dog is Second Hand Dog by Carol Lea Benjamin. Get as much information about the dog's past history as possible, because if the dog shows any behavior problems later, knowing the history can be very valuable in figuring out the cause of a problem and coming up with a way to reshape behavior. Find out if you can, what kind of home the dog has been in. For instance, dogs who have grown up without ever being around cats or kids, often need closer supervision and care when adjusting to a home with cats and/or kids. Dogs owned by only men or women often take time to adjust interacting with a human of the opposite sex of the previous owner. If you're going to get a purebred, learn as much as you can about the breed's basic temperament and trainability. Most often a perfectly good healthy pet with good behavior is in need of a home, but sometimes dogs end up in rescues or shelters because of behavior problems.

You can go online to www.petfinder.com and choose your breed and location you are located at. It will show all kinds of different dogs; they aren't sick or have any diseases.

Most people only want little puppies, or small dogs. I think it is wonderful that you want to adopt an ADULT dog. Once they get too old the shelters just put them to sleep. I think people should adopt ADULT dogs more often. And not go for the little cute ones.

This website tells you if they are good with other pets or kids. Also it might give you a description of the dog.

in addition to breed rescues, try petfinder.com -- you can search by zip code and/or breed/size. Kudos to you for wanting to adopt an adult dog. I believe they understand they are being rescued and will be grateful to you.

Plus, from a purely selfish perspective, they are less of a pain to deal with than a puppy.

Might I recommend a retired racing greyhound? They are so easy to take care of, and don't smell like dogs!

If you go through a rescue you can get a fully vetted, adult dog. And, you will be making room for one of those poor dogs that needs a lot of medical care within the rescue.

All the more reason for you to get one from the local shelter! Maybe you can help save a good dog from a terrible shelter.

ok well that probably means that they are taking bad care of the dog.....try a website that has your type of breed that you want like say jack russell terrier got to www.terrier.com and look at their rescue page....or try the akc ( american kennal club) website...but it might be good just to adopt one from your local animal shelter because you'll give it a nice a home and save it from being put down also try petfinder.com
