Buddhism is a religion/philosophical system founded in the Seventh Century BCE by Gautama Siddhartha a prince of the Sakya tribe of North India/Nepal. As a child he lived in a palace secluded from the suffering of the world. As an adult, when he witnessed the many forms of suffering in the world he set out to find the Way out of suffering.

He renounced his worldly life and became a wandering ascetic -- denying himself worldly pleasure and practicing extreme yoga exercises as a means to find enlightenment. Dissatisfied with this approach,Siddhartha meditated on the problem of suffering while sitting under a Bhodi tree. According to legend he was attacked by Maya, the god of suffering and delusion who wished Siddhartha to give up this path so that as many people as possible would continue to live lives of suffering and delusion.

However, Siddhartha was able to see through Maya's illusions and one morning in May the cause and solution to suffering came to him in a flash of insight. Siddhartha became a Buddha -- an Enlightened One (sometimes translated as an Awakened One).

Through time these principles were formulated and codified as followings:

The Four Noble Truths:
1. Life is Suffering.
2. There is a Cause to Suffering.
3. There is a Way Out of Suffering.
4. The Noble Eight Fold Path is the Way Out of Suffering.

The Noble Eight Fold Path
1.Right View.
2.Right Intention.
3.Right Speech
4. Right Action
5.Right Livelihood
6.Right Effort
7.Right Mindfulness
8.Right Concentration

Buddhism teaches that suffering is caused by negative attachment to: things, emotions, people, and beliefs. The ultimate goal of the philosophy is to achieve an state called Nirvana -- an ideal state in which you no longer suffer because you no hold negative attachments.

Other principles of Buddhism include reincarnation and karma -- Human beings are continuously reincarnated until they can achieve the state of Nirvana and the bad things you do in one life will affect you in the next life.
