Hi Hai t, Sorry for your troubles. Puffiness is generally a sign associated with prolonged cold or a draft of 4 hours or more. A draft hitting the cage can be very subtle. It can even be coming from a near by heating and cooling vent. A quick fix would be to move the cage to a warmer corner and place a heating pad on a side of the cage set on low. You can rig something. Let's try to fight this with a boost in nutrition. For now, chop up some hard boiled egg and add a piece of fresh apple. Pretend to eat it and act like it's delicious. Exaggerate your behavior. You are flock leader and the bird may get interested if you role play like that. Fresh apple is juicy and may prevent dehydration. The egg is a whole protein. It has nutrients that may boost his immune system. Talk to the bird like he is a small child. They are more responsive to that kind of tone. Should you get over this hurdle, change to a good pellet food for parakeets by replacing his all seed diet by 1/4 per week, limit seeds to 10% and add fresh fruits and veggies 10-20%. No avocados, no chocolate. All seed diets lead to malnutrition. Grit is unnecessary because these are small parrots and they hull seeds and don't need grit to grind their food like doves and pigeons do. Clean the cage very well. Disinfect it with a disinfecting house hold cleaner and rinse very very well. You can use white vinegar followed by hydrogen peroxide as a nontoxic alternative. Dry the cage well. Cover the cage at night which can help avoid drafts. Please let us know how things go. May everything improve. If things turn for the worse, know that you did the best you could. Hang in there. Positive thoughts your way.

Why won't they take a sick animal to the vet? It is illegal to deny treatment to an animal that is sick or injured.

Call the vet and explain your situation. That does not cost anything. Maybe they can suggest something, but honestly, without testing it is difficult, if not impossible to treat a sick bird. Without treatment it will likely die.

If it is a matter of money, you can set up a payment plan with the vet. If it is a matter of them just not caring, you can make a choice. You can sit and watch your bird and hope against hope that it will get well, or you can call the humane society or similar service in your area.
You can explain your situation to them. They might help you get treatment for your bird, or they might have you surrender your bird so they can have it treated and then put it up for adoption in another home.

Don't bother with the over the counter medications in pet stores. Those are a very weak antibiotic that goes in the water. They make the water taste different and then the bird will not drink. Even if they do drink it, the doasage of medication is not regulated, so it usually just makes the bacteria more resistant to any medications that are administered in the future.

I have owned birds for 19 years. If your parents or you would like more information, you can email me with specific questions and I will gladly answer them to the best of my ability.

Sometimes pet stores like Petsmart has a free vet there, where you can bring an animal in and ask the vet questions- they do not treat you animal for free but they could tell you what to do. It seems like Petsmart does this every other Saturday. If that does not work I would try calling a vet to get advice. You may also be able to contact a breeder for advice.

puffed out feathers are a general sign of illness, keep the bird warm, with food and water. make sure that you remove anything that may be causing illness eg cold breeze, scented candles or too many greens. also look it up in books or try a google search

The puffed up feathers is a sign of illness.

Keep it as warm as you can, and see if you can persuade them to take the bird to the vet.

those birds can bypass downhill very rapidly. It looks like he could be ill. i might take him to a vet right this moment away. Birds do not replace their behaviour rapidly like that except something is incorrect with them. reliable success, i'm hoping Puff is advantageous.

my parakeet goes puffy too. But after a week or two, it shrinks. I think...THINK that if you clean it's cage it will reduce in size....it might be because of lack of gravel....but I'm not sure.
