If they didn't, there would be crap piled up everywhere. Would you want 2,000 plus students books, backpacks, and coats piled up on your floor?

Schools need either lockers or cloak rooms to store students' coats, umbrellas, gym shoes, extra books, lunches etc.

The average high school's students book load equals 20 lbs...many school's ban bookbags for fear of another Columbine...also, it helps to keep you personal effects there

because, if all the smelly gym socks and such were left lying in the hallways the the whole school would smell real bad.

Because you can keep your books in there - you don't have carry ALL of your books to every class.
